Virtual Reality Porn and Your Sexual Health

The rise of virtual reality entertainment and the progression of our move to living in a metaverse may mean consumers are seeing more opportunities to reconsider their physical lives from financial prospects to social engagement to physical fitness. An outlying concern for some but to others a major focus, sexual health also has to chance to be improved upon via virtual and augmented reality.

Horny is Healthy

Long considered a threat to one’s vision, male masturbation is now known to provide numerous health benefits. While one should of course be careful not to let it override over life goals and social activities, enjoying a solitary “fap” has been strongly suggested to decrease the risk of prostate cancer and promote general prostate health, as well as overall sexual function. Masturbation is no longer seen as a sinful, addictive vice – at least, not according to the secular and scientific worlds.  Staying healthy can of course be fun for both males and females, the benefits of self-pleasure knowing no restrictions to one sex or the other. Although studies are still working towards a clear indication of the long-term health benefits of the female orgasm, it’s already clear it has plenty of power for good. Aside from offering relief from pain, boosting fertility, lowering the risk of hypertension, and bolstering the immune system (which is undoubtedly a boon in a pandemic era), there is also a range of positive mental health effects including stress relief and increased focus. VR creators have utilized physical activities in myriad ways, some healthier than others but all making use of the human body’s need for exercise (of a sort). Whether a stroll through a distant-but-real-world location that requires continued perambulation while wearing a headset and motion trackers or something more overly fun like the uber-successful rhythm game Beat Saber, there are plenty of opportunities to employ VR in your fitness regimen. And if that regimen includes self-pleasure, well, the possibilities are nearly endless. Adding tools and toys to your self-pleasure has a long history that, in recent decades, has blossomed into a boutique industry devoid of brown paper bags and discreet alleyway entrances. Now sold in brightly lit main street storefronts in many cities and looking more and more like consumer lifestyle products, not archaic torture devices or sci-fi oddities, vibrators, penis rings, fellatio simulators, and the like are more commonly accepted as a healthy part of an adventurous sex life. Adding virtual reality to that part of a healthy lifestyle can be as complex or as simple as your desire itself. Many will be content to strap on a headset and remove themselves from the external world while whacking it to traditional 2D porn viewed on a VR cinema screen. Others will take the extra steps to “beat their meat” or “tickle their bean” while engaged in an immersive, realistic sexual encounter with a virtual partner.

The New Age of Porn

Virtual pornography has been at the vanguard of VR entertainment for well over two decades. The first attempts were predominantly 2D productions that claimed to be “virtual” by virtue of being shot solely from the silent male performer’s point-of-view. POV Virtual Reality Porn exploded in popularity and effectiveness in the waning days of the last century but now has been largely supplanted by true virtual reality productions. Requiring an extremely demanding technical setup often using multiple cameras and a very tightly controlled lighting arrangement, VR porn has managed to bring hugely increased immersion and a strong sense of tangibility to its users.  Though some may find the idea of “sex” with a virtual partner a bit difficult to accept, its effectiveness leaves no doubt of its value. Simply staring into the Ultra-HD-rendered eyes of someone for whom you have a strong and mounting desire can be enough to push users to intense states of arousal. Once the more overt sexual activities begin, that arousal can easily lead to memorable sexual experience that, though distinct from those had with a physically present partner, are nonetheless stimulating and gratifying. The technology behind VR porn may be centered around capturing footage of actual humans doing actual human things but that doesn’t mean it can’t be augmented by slightly surreal tools. Heightening and exercising fantasies – a valuable component of a healthy sexual psychology – is a cinch thanks to the myriad augmentations made possible not by purchasing a truckload of costumes, chains, restraints, or purely decorative dungeon-fit items. The BDSM or cosplay enthusiast, adventurist or quidnunc can easily, privately and safely explore that realm of sexual activity via VR – and the same can be said of virtually any fetish or otherwise outlier sex act or scenario. Added to which, the gear required by the VR viewer or user is getting more and more compact and comfortable with each passing year.

Where the Tech is Heading

No longer requiring bulky headsets tethered to a burbling, whirring PC, modestly sized VR and AR (Augmented Reality) devices like the recently revealed Vuzix Shield and Kura Gallium augmented reality glasses, and the more powerful and hotly anticipated Meta Quest 3 are bringing VR and AR porn to consumers in a more comfortable package. The long-teased Magic Leap 2 AR device, a stylish pair of easily wearable smart-glasses, may be headed mostly for the enterprise and industrial markets but it too bodes very well for a smaller form factor of VR and AR device. This should be exciting for any virtual sex enthusiast. After all, the last thing you want while pleasuring yourself is to be encumbered by extraneous bulk.
