9 Rules For Wearing A Watch To An Interview

Wearing A Watch To An Interview

You’ve landed an interview, naturally you want to make the best impression.   Whether you are going to a formal or casual interview these rules apply. Though, formal business interviews are more relevant since there are often stricter dress codes.

Chronoexpert.com sells the widest selection of luxury watches online, which is why we thought this article had best come from them! We asked them, what are the 9 rules for wearing a watch to an interview and this is their advice.

Go confident not brash

There is a very fine line between confidence and coming across pushy and overpowering.  The way you dress can ensure you stick on the right side. If possible avoid gold straps and watches with heavy design features since you don’t want to draw attention in the wrong way.

Avoid Casio & cheap brands

If you don’t own an authentic luxury watch then it’s best to go to the interview without a watch.  Casio’s and cheap watch brands just cheapen the look of whatever you are wearing. There are some exceptions to this rule since there are more boutique watch brands popping up.  A boutique, high quality brand is a good second option. But a luxury watch gives the best impression.

Don’t wear Fakes

You would be surprised at how easy it is to recognise a fake luxury watch.  The replica designers are not as good as you think. It takes about a year to make a Rolex watch.  Do you think that another designer can easily copy this level of craftmanship with the bare minimum tools and low quality materials? If you wear a fake you risk being caught out and your future boss knowing you purchased a watch from an illegal market, it’s not a great impression!

Watch strap & shoes should match

You might know that the colour of your belt and shoes should match.  If you wear a luxury watch, the strap should match your belt and shoes as well.   It doesn’t need to be the exact same leather, and not even the exact shade, but mismatching shows that you don’t pay attention to the details.  And pretty much every employer is looking to hire someone that has “good attention to detail”.

Avoid too many complications

If you only own one luxury watch and it has several complications then it might be worth wearing it anyway.  But, if you are choosing a luxury watch for formal occasions like interviews, choose a watch with fewer or no complications. This will ensure that the dial is clean and minimalist & won’t distract attention.  The last thing you want is for your future employer to be commenting and questioning your watch when it’s your skills and experience they are there to find out about. Don’t make your watch the centre of attention!

Don’t wear a sports watch with a suit

If you have a formal interview which requires a suit it’s best to stick to a dress watch. Sports watches tend to be very thick and bulky with lots of complications.  They are difficult to wear with a dress shirt because you will find it difficult to button up your shirt over the watch face as it is to bulky.

Wear your watch underneath your shirt

Moving on from the point above, you need a luxury watch which is thin enough to sit on your wrist and button up your shirt.  The correct positioning is, the watch should be just visible when you have your hands in your pocket.

Wear your watch on your non-dominant hand

There are many style guides now which say this is not important. However, this tip is more for practicality than for style.  If you wear your watch on your non-dominant hand it will stay more protected since you do less with that hand! Simple, but it works. Avoid scratches by wearing your watch on the right hand.

Choose a minimalist, clean face

The best watch faces are very simple and clear.  You should be able to easily read the time so numerals are best.  A white or black face fits well with most outfits, whether you are going casual or formal.
